You’ve also got a few 20-litre fabric pots filled with a rich, organic soil mix you learned about through the Growers Collective (GC), a new community group that shares sustainable growing practices.

The GC’s online forum recommended adding local compost and bat guano, a natural fertilizer sourced from caves in the region, to boost soil health and ensure your plants get the nutrients they need.

You’ve chosen to grow, a lesser-known South African strain from the Venda region, prized for its compact buds and a sweet, herbal aroma with notes of rooibos tea, reflecting the area’s cultural connection to the plant.

You’ve trained the plant using a low-stress technique called “tying down,” a method you picked up at a workshop hosted by the South African Sustainable Cannabis Initiative (SASCI) during their 2025 “Grow Green” webinar series.

The plant’s canopy is even, with dense, trichome-covered buds that sparkle under the LED lights, a sign of a healthy grow.

You’ve also installed a small fan to mimic the natural breezes, ensuring good airflow to prevent mould—a common issue in indoor setups, especially during the humid rainy season.

Fun fact: Home growing has exploded in South Africa since private cultivation was decriminalized in 2018 last year, the South African Cannabis Growers Association (SACGA) estimated that over 50,000 households are now cultivating their own cannabis, taking advantage of the country’s ideal growing conditions and the legal protections under the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act.
