Wandering into the Park, a spot famous for its cannabis crowd, the air hums with energy.
The sun’s out, glinting off the lake, people are lounging on picnic blankets, and the faint scent of weed mixes with grilled boerewors from nearby braais.
A familiar face spots you—your old friend from the Cannabis Alliance, a new group that organizes rallies here every year, like the big 420 Day event.
“Hey, long time!” they call, waving you over. They’re puffing on a joint of Jozi Jive, a local strain with a funky, diesel-like aroma and a giggly high. “Want a hit?”
It’s tempting—the vibe is chill, reggae beats drift from a portable speaker, and the park feels alive with the cannabis community’s spirit.
Fun fact: Zoo Lake Park has been a cannabis rally hotspot since the 2010s—the South African Cannabis History Project (SACHP) notes it hosted the first 420 Day rally in Joburg in 2012, drawing 500 people!
