The Dispensary Dive

Slipping into a dispensary tucked behind a nondescript storefront, a soft glow from fairy lights welcomes you inside.

These places are popping up despite the law frowning on them selling cannabis is technically illegal, but enforcement is spotty, says the South African Cannabis Wellness Group (SCWG).

This dispensary operates in a grey zone with a traditional healer’s certificate, legally selling tinctures and creams, like Healing Mist Tincture (10:1 CBD) and Soothe Balm, a cannabis-infused cream with a lavender scent.

Inside, it’s chill: jars of Harmony Bud with a floral, chamomile-like aroma line the shelves, while honey-flavored edibles wink from the counter.

“Welcome! Try our tinctures—they’re great for relaxation,” a laid-back staffer from the South African Healers’ Cannabis Collective (SHCC) smiles warmly.

It’s tempting, and safer than the streets—the South African Cannabis Safety Insights (SCSI) notes SAPS made 7,500 street arrests in 2024, but only 15 dispensaries were shut down. What do you do?

Fun fact: Traditional healers are bridging the gap—the South African Traditional Medicine Report (STMR) says 20% of dispensaries now use healer certificates to operate in 2025!
